Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

My child is nervous about the first day of school, how can I help?

Coming to kindergarten is an important milestone in your child’s life. We will encounter many new experiences. When you bring/pick up your child from school, we are asking that you say your good-byes/hellos in the car. One of our goals is to help your child become a responsible and an independent learner. Each child needs to be able to hang up his/her jacket and backpack by themselves as well as take care of other classroom duties. Please do not worry if your child needs help…we will be there. I am sure you will agree that hearing your child say, “I can do it all by myself!” is a good feeling! Thank you very much for helping your child grow in this matter.

On the first day of kindergarten, you are welcome to come into the classroom with your child to share their first experience. Although it may be an emotional time for some of you, to make the transition more smoothly for your child, it is important that you say your good-byes in a timely manner as your child will begin to grow wings and explore on their own as we begin our first day of kindergarten.

How can I participate or volunteer in the classroom?

Positive/supportive volunteers are needed Monday-Friday to assist with individual students and small groups. I will not be having positive/supportive volunteers in the classroom the first 2 months of school. We need to establish routines and procedures in the beginning of the school year. Please let me know if you are interested in working in the classroom or if you would like to help out with special projects at home.  Throughout the school year there will be a variety of special classroom activities and celebrations. I encourage you to attend these functions when possible and support them by sending needed supplies. Your support is greatly appreciated :)

Can we celebrate my child's birthday at school?

Birthdays in kindergarten are FUN! We will not be able to bring in treats (due to allergies). Here are some birthday ideas:

-party favors (match cars, magnifying glasses, bubbles, chalk, etc.)

-buy something fun for the class (books, games, music, class pet, plants/flowers/tree)...Please give me a heads-up before getting a class pet:)

-decorate a box & index cards (or bring in an autograph book or shirt), we will write nice things about your child

What should my child wear to school?

Your child will be wearing school uniforms. If your child does not wear their uniform, they will not have recess for the day (school rules). Please have your child wear elastic band if they are wearing pants/shorts. Please no belts. Please have your child wear socks & sneakers to school everyday. If your child has long hair, please make sure that it is pulled back away from their face. It is hard for them to read/do their school work with their hair in their face. If your child wears a skirt/dress, please make sure they wear shorts/leggings underneath. We will be going outside daily for recess and gardening. Please double tie their shoelaces. If your child does not know how to tie shoes, it would be helpful if he/she has Velcro/slip on shoes. Please write your child’s name (first and last) on jackets, backpacks, etc. as they do go missing occasionally. Please check in the lost and found if your child loses something. We will get dirty! We will be painting, gluing, etc. Kindergarten tends to be messy. Please make sure your child brings emergency clothes in a Zip-lock bag with your child's name on it (1 pair of underwear, socks, uniform top, uniform bottom).

Will there be a nap-time or snacks?

Your child may bring in a small healthy snack during snack time if they choose. Please no nuts of any kind due to allergies. We have water fountains in the classroom. If your child needs to bring in a water bottle for lunch, please make sure it is spill proof. In the beginning of the school year, students will have the opportunity to have nap-time/quiet time if they choose this center during their Passion Time.

What do I do if my child's usual end of day pick-up changes?

For your child’s safety, please write me a note, text me on See Saw or call the school with any pick-up changes. If we do not receive a note or a phone call, your child will be going home their usual way. Please contact us at least the day before (if possible).

What should my child bring to school?

Your child will need to bring a backpack to school every day to carry home papers/projects from school. Please check the contents of this backpack daily. They will be getting a folder with a reading log, sight word books, & leveled books. This folder needs to be returned back to me daily. Folders will not be going home on the weekends. I will be giving you all of their completed classwork on Fridays.

How can I help my child succeed this year?

I am excited for our positive team approach concerning your child’s education. We all have the same goal – for your child to be happy, challenged, comfortable, and secure at school. We need to work together in order for your child to reach maximum success. I am asking that you please review things we have learned at school on a daily basis. Please read books daily, play word games, review letters/sounds, numbers, etc. I will be sending home some ideas for you throughout the school year. Together we will make your child’s kindergarten year the best ever!
